Dr Beck is a clinician-scientist in Division of Gastroenterology at University of Calgary. After completing a PhD at Queen’s University, where he was involved in developing the TNBS model of Crohn’s disease, he completed Medical School, Internal Medicine and gastroenterology training at University of Calgary. This was followed by a three-year post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He started on staff at University of Calgary in 1999. Presently he spends 75-80% of his time committed to research exploring pathways involved in intestinal injury and inflammation. He spends 20-25% of his time as a clinical gastroenterologist at the Foothills Hospital with a focus in inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients and other states of altered immune function.
He was the director of the MD/PhD Leaders in Medicine Program at University of Calgary and has been involved in mentoring and teaching for over 20 years. Has received local, national and international recognition for mentoring including the American Gastroenterology Association Mentorship Award and Killam Award.
