Dr. Mark Crowther trained in Internal Medicine and received his MD from the University of Western Ontario. At McMaster University, he was trained in Hematology and completed a focused Research Fellowship in Thromboembolism at McMaster University under the direction of Drs Ginsberg, Weitz and Hirsh. He is currently Chair and Professor in the Department of Medicine and is the Leo Pharma Chair in Thromboembolism Research, all at McMaster University. He is Deputy Chair of the Senior Research Committee for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Treasurer of the American Society of Hematology, and past President of The Anticoagulation Forum.
Dr. Crowther’s clinical activities focus on caring for patients with thromboembolic disorders and managing complications treatments for thromboembolic diseases and other hematologic conditions. His research includes examining the optimal methods to prevent and treat arterial and venous thrombosis. His primary areas of research impact are in the management of patients with antiphospholipid antibodies, the prevention of venous thrombosis in patients in the intensive care unit, studies examining optimal management of both parenteral and oral anticoagulants, and defining best practices in the use of vitamin Kin patients with excess warfarin effect.
Dr. Crowther has more than 500 peer reviewed publications with an H factor of more than 115 (Google Scholar) and has presented at more than 550 meetings worldwide, including the American Heart Association, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He has been inducted into the Royal Society of Canada for his research and for his humanitarian work in Uganda.
