Dr Smita Halder is an Associate Professor and a GI Specialist at McMaster University.

She was born in Manchester, UK and obtained her medical degree from Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities. She completed her general medicine training in Edinburgh, and GI residency in Manchester.

She was awarded a 4-year Medical Research Council Health Services and Epidemiology Fellowship and pursued a PhD in both the UK and at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA.

In July 2008 she pursued a 2-year post-doctoral clinical fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, to investigate the role of genetic and clinical factors in severe Crohn’s disease.

She was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University in July 2010, where she combines her clinical work with research and teaching commitments.

Her research interests include the epidemiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and health services research.
