Dr. Karen I. Kroeker is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta. She completed her BSc and MD degree from the University of Calgary. After completing her core internal medicine residency at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC she moved to Edmonton and completed her gastroenterology residency at the University of Alberta (2009), and an Advanced Clinical & Research Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). She received her Masters of Experimental Medicine at the University of Alberta in 2012.

Dr. Kroeker joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta in 2010. She is a member of the Medical Staff at the University of Alberta Hospital where she is the Gastroenterology Site Chief. She runs an inflammatory bowel disease clinic, including a specialized pediatric IBD transition and a multidisciplinary medical-surgical IBD clinic.

Dr. Kroeker served as the Gastroenterology Residency Program Director from 2015-2022. She is actively involved in the teaching of residents and fellows in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease. She is currently the Chair of the RCPSC Specialty Committee in Gastroenterology.
