Dr. Robert Riddell received his medical degree from the University of London, England in 1967 (Barts) and post-graduate training in Pathology at the Hammersmith Hospital Royal Postgraduate Medical School, and St. Bartholomew’s and St. Mark’s Hospitals in London, with an emphasis on gastrointestinal (GI) pathology.

Following his pathology training in the UK, Dr. Riddell went to the University of Chicago for what should have been 2 years, but turned into 10, where he was Assistant and Associate Professor in Pathology. In 1984 he moved to McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and remained there for 18 years, being Chief of Anatomical Pathology for most of that time, and where a GI Pathology fellowship Program was also started. In 2001 he moved to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.

Dr. Riddell is now Professor, Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology at the University of Toronto and Section Head for Gastrointestinal and Immunopathology at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Publications include co-authorship/editorship in 6 books, and approximately 250 papers and book chapters, predominantly in gastrointestinal pathology. Major work interests include all facets of GI pathology, both inflammatory and neoplastic diseases, including the pathology of GI stromal tumors and their differential diagnosis. With Doctors Aaron Pollett and Richard Kirsch, Mount Sinai now has a GI Pathology Consultation Service, as well as a GI pathology fellowship.
