Séverine Vermeire graduated as MD at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Part of her training was done at the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion, Paraguay (1993), and at the Montreal General Hospital (McGill University), Montreal Canada (2000-2001). In 2001, she obtained her Ph.D., entitled “Study on genetic polymorphisms and serologic markers in Inflammatory Bowel Disease” as a fellow of the National Funds for Scientific Research of Belgium (F.W.O.). Part of her Ph.D. was done at the University of Oxford, U.K., at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics with Professor Derek Jewell. Since 2003 she is full staff member at the Gastroenterology Department of the University Hospital Leuven and is appointed Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
Séverine Vermeire enjoyed awards from the Flemish Association for Gastroenterology (1996 and 2001), the National Crohn’s and Colitis Association (CCV) (1997), the Belgian Gastroenterology Association (2001) and was given the Biotherabel-AstraZeneca-FWO scientific scholarship in 2001. She received a gold medal at the World Congresses of Gastroenterology in Vienna (1998) and was a Rising Star in Gastroenterology at the European Congress UEGW in Prague 2004 . Her scientific work contributed so far to more than 160 peer-reviewed full papers. Séverine Vermeire is a member of the Scientific Committee of ECCO (European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization) and sits in the European United Gastroenterology Foundation (UEGF) Scientific Committee. She is Associate Editor for GUT and the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis (JCC).
